My specialty is functional organization, but what is that? The simplest explanation is a form of organization that focuses more on how the home and organization functions, instead of the look of it.
Functional organization can look great, sure, but some people get stressed out when it comes to trying to make things look perfect. As someone with ADHD, I know the feeling of overwhelm in trying to meet the perfection of Instagram Reels.
If you like, and can maintain, that perfectly lined up and curated look, that is great. However, many people have challenges, including other people in their home, that make this difficult. So, that is where functional organization comes in.
Your items are still organized, labeled, and easy to find, but you are less concerned about the perfect look of them.
For example: Your play room has bins that are labeled and stations for the different types of toys. However, no one worries about folding dress up clothes or stacking blocks. They are just put in their place.
Need another example? You roll your clothes or just put them in a drawer or bin designated for that type of clothes instead of taking the time to fold them. It is faster, seems less overwhelming, and is still organized.
Will your home still be organized and will you be able to find what you need quickly? Of course. But you don’t feel the need to have everything lined up military style and if your child just throws toys in a bin, it doesn’t make you nuts.
