Toy organization is an ever-evolving process. As kids get older, their toy choices tend to stay the same for a longer period of time, but when they are younger, they change often. So, here are some ways to create a toy organization system that is easily adjusted, as well as some ideas for moving things around a bit as they get older.
- Stations are a great way to give kids an easy way to identify where different toys belong. So create one area for the play kitchen area, one for building toys like Legos, and one for reading.
- Sort all toys by category. This gives each toy a place, and makes it obvious when a certain category is overflowing, and either needs sorted through or put in a larger bin if it is a category they especially love.
- When possible, and especially for younger children, use clear bins. This makes it easy for them to see what toys are where.
- Label bins with labels that have a chalkboard or whiteboard surface. This way it is easy to make adjustments as kids grow and change toy preferences. These can be purchased i either stick-on or clip-on form.
- Rotate toys. By keeping some toys away and every 3-6 months rotating them with the ones that are out, the kids always have fresh options, and you don’t have a ton of toys out all of the time. Plus, it gives you an opportunity to easily clean the ones going into storage. Just keep a basic plastic bin in your basement or garage.
- Have a phone call bin. Create a small bin for each child that has items they are only allowed to play with when you have to make an important phone call or do some other important task. While I can’t guarantee complete quiet, it should cut down on interruptions for at least 15-20 minutes.
