Organization can seem like a daunting task, but having tools to put things in order is a good place to start. However, I believe in functional organization, not perfect organization.
What does that mean? To me it means organization that works for you, but isn’t necessarily the kind of organization we have come to see.
All over social media there are photos and videos of people with bins and baskets in every nook and cranny, and this is great, but as someone with ADHD, that overwhelmed me. So, I found my own way of getting things in order.
First, I had to realize that as long as it functions well and I can find things when I need them, it is organized. I don’t need to waste time digging for things, but it also doesn’t have to photo perfect.
Second, I know that if I get overwhelmed, it is near impossible for me to get started, and that doesn’t solve anything. I would end up at a standstill and nothing would get done.
And so I began my journey of functional organization. One of the keys to this has been first starting with the tools I have, and then determining what I need. Then, I measure, and I make sure I measure twice to be sure I am correct. I have not perfected anything, for sure, but over time I have come up with flexible solutions, and I have turned it into a career I love as a professional organizer.
