Grandma’s Buckeye Recipe

As someone from Ohio, it seems natural we would make buckeyes, but for us it also has a family history. My grandma and aunt always made them. In fact, my cousin was the one who passed the recipe on to me from his mom. This recipe is so simple, yet so delicious and nostalgic.

1 pound of milk chocolate
2 cups peanut butter
3 cups powdered sugar
1 cup salted butter (softened but not melted)

Mix the butter and peanut butter together in a bowl until smooth. Then add the powdered sugar about 1/2 a cup at a time until it is all blended well. It seems like a lot of sugar, but trust us, it isn’t.

Roll the mixture into balls about a tablespoon in size each. Place on a wax paper lined cookie sheet. Freeze for about 15-20 minutes.

While the peanut butter mixture is in the freezer, melt the chocolate in a double boiler, stirring constantly. Or, melt it in the microwave by placing it in a bowl, cooking 30 seconds at a time and stirring after each time. This will keep it from burning.

Place toothpicks in each of the peanut butter balls. Use them to hold them while you dip them in the melted chocolate, leaving a spot at the top so they look like real buckeyes. Return them to the cookie tray and remove the toothpicks. Smooth over the hole with your finger.

Let harden and enjoy! Any leftovers should be kept in a sealed container. They will last for 2-3 days on the counter, about a month in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer. ENJOY!!

Makes 3-4 dozen.
